The illegal hunting and wildlife trade is having a devastating effect on carnivores and pangolins in Vietnam. Confiscated animals are often kept tied up in the bags they were confiscated in and stored in hot parking areas. Without emergency care, many animals die due to dehydration, lack of appropriate food, festering trap wounds and untreated disease. The Rapid Response Team is always ready to respond to rescue calls immediately, and have an enormous positive impact on the animal’s welfare and likelihood of survival.

As a result, animals are often kept tied up tightly in the bags or small cages they were confiscated in and stored in hot parking areas while the paperwork for release, transfer or sale is finalised. This process can take multiple days, and without urgent professional care many animals die due to dehydration, lack of appropriate food, festering trap wounds and untreated disease. These animals need immediate care to help them survive while they are waiting for the final decisions from government officers.  Our Rapid Response Team provides the animals with urgent medical care whilst the paperwork is being processed, this will have an enormous positive impact on the animal’s welfare and likelihood of survival.

The Rapid Response Team consists of veterinarians and wildlife keepers and is fully equipped to quickly go to a confiscation site. They are always ready to respond to calls to rescue wildlife immediately, even in the night or in the weekends. The Rapid Response Team brings transport boxes, a medical emergency kit, food and water for the animals, to demonstrate best practice in wildlife rescue.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ background_image=”6785″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/2″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ background_image=”6764″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/2″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”padding-3-percent” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/2″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_custom_heading text=”Pangolin rescues” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:left|color:%230f9547″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]In 2017 our Rapid Response Team was called out on 22 rescue missions and rescued 427 animals from 8 different species. The majority of the animals we rescue are Sunda pangolins (Manis javanica), the most illegally traded mammal in the world. The pangolins that our Rapid Response Team rescue are typically found traumatized and in poor health. Many confiscated pangolins also have injuries from snare traps, abusive handling, or being wrenched from a tree during capture. Pangolins are sold by weight, so many of them are force fed by the poachers with a corn pulp or even stones to increase their profits. This is disastrous for their health. They’ve endured weeks or sometimes months of hard travel and are often kept in tight bags without excess to food or water. Upon arrival, our Rapid Response Team frees the pangolins out of their cruel transportation conditions and provides emergency care for those in need. After initial health checks, the pangolins are placed into a transport box with food and water where they can stretch their legs for the first time.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” bg_color=”#e5e5e5″ scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”padding-3-percent” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/2″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_custom_heading text=”TRAINING FOR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:left|color:%230f9547″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]Animals are frequently released back into the wild immediately after confiscation. Without access to technical expertise, the release site is often selected primarily for its proximity to the government office, resulting in animals being released into unsuitable habitat where starvation, hunting and further trafficking are very likely. Technical advice is urgently needed to ensure animals are released into habitat where they will be safe.

To achieve a more effective response to wildlife trafficking and increase the number of animals successfully released back into the wild, SVW is committed to sharing our expertise to build the capacity of personnel involved in wildlife management in Vietnam.

Therefore, the Rapid Response Team’s role extends beyond emergency care for our animals. The team provides solutions for government officers to combat the illegal wildlife trade and contribute to wildlife conservation in Vietnam through the successful rehabilitation of confiscated wildlife.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ background_image=”8932″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/2″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][divider line_type=”No Line”][vc_custom_heading text=”Rapid Response Team in action” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:left|color:%230f9547″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/1cE4Twb6vRk”][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/VrP75sVW9Ig”][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/o48sDii1aGI”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][divider line_type=”No Line”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” bg_color=”#e5e5e5″ scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”padding-3-percent” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_custom_heading text=”Updates on our work” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:left|color:%230f9547″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][divider line_type=”No Line”][nectar_blog layout=”masonry-blog-fullwidth” category=”rapid_response_team” load_in_animation=”none” posts_per_page=”3″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”light” text_align=”center” top_padding=”40″ bottom_padding=”40″ enable_gradient=”true” color_overlay=”#565e67″ color_overlay_2=”#231f20″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”1″][vc_column centered_text=”true” column_padding=”padding-5-percent” column_padding_position=”left-right” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]
