THE OWSTON'S CIVET
about shaldon
SHALDON – AN AMBASSADOR OF HOPE
Shaldon is one of ten Owston’s civets born at SVW in early 2025. His birth marked a historic milestone: he was part of the first-ever recorded litter of four kittens born to a single Owston’s civet mother.
With milk limited to only a few teats, the mother struggled to care for all four offspring. Shaldon, the weakest of the litter, began to fade. To save his life, our team made the vital decision to hand-raise him. Our keepers provided round-the-clock care, bottle-feeding him every 2–3 hours, day and night.
Thanks to this tireless devotion, Shaldon defied the odds and is now a thriving five-month-old. Named after the Shaldon Wildlife Trust to celebrate our long-standing partnership, Shaldon will soon join our conservation breeding program. He represents a beacon of hope for his species, helping us work toward the goal of returning Owston’s civets to the wild by 2028.
