“ECHO” – The Leopard Cat Education Ambassador (Prionailurus bengalensis)

The name Echo means “a lingering sound” — a reminder that the impact of one story can stay with us, and should never be repeated.

Echo was bought and kept as a pet when she was only about 20 days old. During her time in captivity, she lost her entire tail — a vital part of a wild cat’s body that helps with balance and hunting. In her early months, Echo lived like a domestic cat and was fed cooked food, instead of learning the survival skills she would have needed in the wild.

When the owner realized that keeping a wild animal was wrong, they voluntarily transferred Echo to a Wildlife Rescue Center. There, she received medical care, dietary adjustments, and behavioral rehabilitation in a semi-wild environment. However, because she lost her tail and was kept in captivity from such a young age, Echo no longer has the ability to return to the wild.

Today, Echo remains at the center as an Education Ambassador, helping people understand that:

• A single decision to keep a wild animal as a pet can change that animal’s life forever

• Loving wildlife the right way means letting them live in their natural habitat

Echo is a lasting “echo” from the wild — reminding us that protecting wildlife begins with not keeping, not buying, and not consuming wild animals
