ADOPT MILA & CHAN
THE ASIAN SMALL-CLAWED OTTER
ABOUT MILA & CHAN
Both are Asian Small Clawed Otters. Mila was transferred to the center when she was a little older. She was fortunate to be handed over to SVW by a French conservationist working in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Since coming to the center, Mila has become proficient in eating and drinking, so she does not need much care.
Chan was about 3 – 4 months old when he arrived at SVW. In order to help Chan recover before releasing him back into the wild, we trained him along with other male otters in a semi-wild environment for 5-6 months. Through the training process in the semi-wild area, we noticed that Chan’s hunting skill was falling behind that of his friends and Chan showed begging behaviour to them for food. While the remaining 3 otters in the group are ready to return to the wild and separate from the group to search for the female, Chan is still unable to care for himself and this also slows down the recovery process of the whole group. For this reason, we have decided to keep Chan at the rescue center.
So far, both of these otters are living very healthy and happy lives in their own enclosures, they will be unable to return to the wild, as they have lost their wild instincts due to being kept as pets from a very young age. Being SVW’s education ambassadors, they will together spread a meaningful message about otter conservation

Releasing rescued otters doesn’t happen overnight, and unfortunately our educational animals aren’t ever going to be released due to the injuries they have suffered as victims of the illegal wildlife trade. With your symbolic adoption, you will support us to provide excellent care for not only Fishcake and permanent residents at our place, but also other rescued otters in quarantine waiting to be released.
This can include:
